More Than a Martial Art

Judo means “the gentle way.” Founded by Jigoro Kano in 1882, judo develops much more than physical skill. Through training, students learn balance, coordination, perseverance, self-control, respect, and the confidence to face challenges both on and off the mat.

At Commerce Judo, our goal isn't simply to develop better athletes. We want to help young people and adults become people of strong character—responsible, confident, respectful, and prepared to become the men and women God has called them to be.

Character Comes First

What happens on the mat matters—but who our students become matters even more. These values guide how we train, how we compete, how we treat one another, and how we live when we leave the dojo.

Beginner Judo

Every judoka starts with the fundamentals. Students first learn how to fall safely, proper movement and balance, basic throws, safety, courtesy, and the skills needed to continue progressing.

What To Expect

Walking into the dojo for the first time can feel a little overwhelming, but you won’t have to figure things out on your own. Our instructors and experienced students will be there to guide you through every step.

Your first lessons will focus on one of the most important skills in judo: learning how to fall safely without hurting yourself or others. Once you’ve developed that foundation, you’ll begin learning how to throw and apply the techniques of judo.

Every step is carefully explained and practiced at a pace that allows you to learn with confidence. Progress isn’t about how quickly you move—it’s about mastering each skill along the way and building a strong foundation for what comes next.

Meet Sensei Lay

Sensei Lay began studying judo in 1977 as a high school student looking for a way to defend himself. What he discovered was much more than self-defense. Judo became a means of physical, emotional, moral, and spiritual growth.

Today, as both Sensei and Pastor of Bread of Life Church of the Nazarene, he brings those lessons to a new generation through Commerce Judo—helping students develop skill on the mat while growing in character, confidence, responsibility, and faith.
